It is shown how scrap melting time under actual EAF bath conditions can be calculated by using these data. The three most efficient innovations capable of sharp accelerating the melting process are determined. These are: increase in velocity of metal flows at the scrap charging zone due to bath blowing with oxygen tuyeres submerged into the melt to a slag-metal interface; expansion of the volume of the charging zone by means of changing bath configuration as well as using special charging devices; and high-temperature scrap preheating in the shaft with high-power burner devices.

For the purpose of the highest increase in the scrap melting rate, the bath blowing system with movable roof oxygen tuyeres developed by the authors is offered. Submerging of tuyeres to slag-metal interface as well as direction of jets to the scrap charging zone are key features of the system. The offered roof tuyeres comprise of tips with most effective jet cooling which provides high tuyere durability when submerging not only into slag but also that into metal. Basic designed tuyere parameters are given. The tuyeres are automatically maintained at the slag-metal interface by using reliable sensors monitoring positions of tuyere tips relatively to this interface.
